Here are some of the special events that take place in our school every year:

Hockey:Hockey starts every Friday straight after school. It is played at NUIG sports ground at Dangan.  You can only start hockey when you are in 1stclass and up.  At the end of the year there is a Parents v Children hockey match, and after there is a barbeque at the school.

The hockey we play is not Ice Hockey it is on Astroturf (aka fake grass).  We sometimes play matches against other clubs.  Sandra is our hockey teacher.

School Tours:

The school brings the children to a variety of places and all have received positive reports. Over the years we have visited Dublin Zoo,  Craggaunowen, Galway Aquarium, Roscommon Activity Centre and many other places.

Last year the senior classes took a bus ride to Brigit’s Garden in Moycullen.  After a few hours, they then left for the Glengowla Mine.  After that, they left to visit Aughanure Castle, and learned all about the inhabitants that once lived and ruled there.

Last year the Junior Classes left for Turoe Pet Farm and encountered all sorts of different farm animals.

So, in St. Nicholas Parochial School, the school tours are educational and interesting! I wonder where we will visit this year?

Pancake Tuesday:

( A Tradition in our school)

What do we do?

On Pancake Tuesday we bring pancakes in to school and the Parents Association will come and heat and serve them, we also bring in €2.

What is the €2 for?

The €2 is for…….. Charity…..because we’re nice!!!!!

We enjoy Pancake Tuesday because ……..We all get to eat pancakes together!

Dress Up Day:

Every October, the pupils dress up around Halloween.  They are allowed to choose any character from a film, book or TV show.  Sometimes book tokens are awarded as prizes; top prize is usually a €10 Book Token.  In my opinion, some of the more memorable costumes were: a dragon, a Greek knight, Darth Maul, a business man, an Orc, a goblin, the Cat in the Hat, a batgirl, Fiona from “Shrek”, Scherazade, a cowboy, a dark knight, a scarecrow, numerous fairies and princesses, Spidermen and The Phantom of the Opera.

But, unfortunately the champion of all costumes is leaving sixth class this year……So the challenge to beat him passes to you!

Sports Day:

Our sports day is in June.  Sports day is down at the plots at Dyke Road near our school.  On sports day we play soccer, potato and spoon race, 3 legged race, wheelbarrow race. Of course, we have running races too! and at the end we have a barbeque with vegetarian burgers and hot dogs and beef burgers.  At the end we play 5-a side football with mixed teams.  Parents are always welcome to come and watch the fun.

Christmas Holidays:

We hold our Christmas pageant on a Friday close to 6th December which is St. Nicholas Day.  We hold it in the Collegiate Church.  We sing lots of songs, we tell the story of the birth of Jesus and everybody in the school is in the play.

We also have a Christmas party.  Ooooh, we go to the cinema, we get treats, Santa comes, he gives gifts to us and we finish early.  The best day ever, we have it near Christmas.

The Swimming Gala:

In our school the swimming gala is on in Leisureland and it is in June.  In the swimming gala you can also win medals (gold, silver and bronze).  You learn many strokes front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and also the butterfly. T he older classes do diving and life saving.

All the children in our school, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class can go to swimming. Swimming is good fun, you learn a lot and the swimming teachers are really nice. We also go to the slice at the end of the swimming year. Going to swimming has been a tradition in our school for years...ITS SO FUN!
